I was on norton 360 before
First, make sure you FULLY unistall the previous anti virus software before putting any new AV software on (and reboot).

If you put new AV software on while the old AV software is still there it will confuse the Windows Security Center and may mean you are not fully covered.

I used to run AVG but have now moived all my PC over to Avast which I feel is better.

Get Avast from here (you do have to register, which is free, and you then enter the code they send you)

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
google I have a free norton one I think - at least I haven't paid a sub for it
>and you then enter the code they send you)

Sorry this may be confusing.

They dont send you the product code, they send you a string of letters and numbers that you enter into Avast, which allows you to use it for free.

so how come when you press renew button for norton its about 60 quid!! when there are free ones.
don't go onto the renew bit - that is how they make their money or do as advised above - mine came up with free anti virus in right hand corner of screen with yellow at the top
Question Author
but surely I've had the free trial already?
Norton don't produce a "proper" free antivirus/internet security suite. There are some loopholes you can use to extend free trials or otherwise pinch Norton for free, but they are technically against the software's end user license agreement.

Norton is much better than it used to be, but it's no better than Avast! or Avira, and both of those have a properly free version as previously mentioned. Don't be duped into thinking that Free = Rubbish, sometimes when it comes to freeware software, you really can get a lot more than you pay for, and it's all above board and legal.
