"Best" is really down to personal opinion and what you want to use it for. RedHat is highly recomended for new users and is the most popular in the US. SuSe is the most popular in Europe. Other populare ones are Debian and Slackware. There are about 30 others too. Try http://linux.com/ for more info.

Mandrake is also a good version of Linux, its good for new users too.

Linux V2.0 is due shortly which is allegedly much more user friendly, so you could wait for this. Alternatively, if you check out google, you can take your pick.
