My niece has a Apple Mac laptop. It is running on Mac OS 10.5.1 and she is trying to update the OS to 10.5.8 but it stops installing at about 10%. Any ideas ?

Try downloading and installing the 10.5.8 combo update rather than using the link from Software update. Combo updates are a full OS version rather than an incremental update.
