New Computer

I know very little about computers so any help on this matter is greatly aprreciated. I am getting a new computer but have around 100 word documents and a few hundred songs I would like to save from my old computer and put on my new one. How would I go about putting these on a disk, as I think a disk will only hold about 15 songs. Do the files have to be compressed or something like that?
