FTP How does it work?

Please can someone enlighten me to what ftp is, what it's used for, is it difficult to use (can someone who's not very technically minded use it?) Thanks very much.

I understand it stands for File Transfer Protocol - it's what the computer uses automatically when you download a file from the internet.
