Laptop keyboard

I am doing some menus for a local business and whilst typing them out it I noticed that
sometimes you need a letter with a small mark (I don't even know what it's called) over the top of it,
it's usually the letter E that turns the sound of it from say CAFF to CAF-AY. can anybody tell me how
I achieve this. I have looked everywhere but cannot find how to get this on my keyboard..

One way is to use the numeric keyboard function - with my Toshiba using the Fn key+F11 means that part of the key board can be used to for numerical input and you then use the values as given here http://tlt.its.psu.ed...s/codealt.html#accent to input the appropriate - you would need to check your laptop manual for which function keys you would need to use.

e.g. to type in é (e acute) I turn the numeric on, keep the Alt key down whilst typing mkll (which are the keys for 0233 in the numeric layout part of the keyboard) and then turn numeric off.

Thanks Bibblebub I have found it now, by pressing the ''Alt Gr'' key as well as the E key I get this é......

Or just hold down the ALT-GR key to the right of the space bar and press the letter you want the accent over.

and what do you use for graves or umlauts or cedillas?

You can always use the Character Map. Available under Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

Also, this gives you the codes to access the required symbol directly.

As I read this post I was attempting to do this umlauts thingy but I don't see a 'Gr' key on my keyboard and the 'Fn' key is not doing anything either. Can someone guide me please?

I can do what Regulo suggested but I wanted to do the other suggestion.

The key says "Alt Gr" and on a UK keyboard it is immediately to the right of the space bar
