Son has an old PC, have deleted loads of files to make some space for a largish CDRom game.  Unable to run scandisk [even with all other progs - antivirus etc closed down] any ideas? also what exe.files can we safely removed to make more space?

Okay, firstly, most .exe files are not that big, so if you're resorting to deleting them to make room, there's something wrong. What operating system are you running on? If it's a version of windows beyond 95 you should be using the "Add/Remove Programs" function in the Control Panel.

Try using "Find Files/Folders" and search for all files larger than, say, 10MB. Find out what they are - if they are not needed, delete them.

How big is the Hard drive and what game are you trying to install?
Take it to somewhere like PC World and get more memory put on it.
if you go to START, SEARCH/FIND and type in *TMP. This will search for and show all temporary files. These can all be deleted. Once you have done this carry out the same procedure typing in *OLD. These can safely be removed. Repeat the procedure typing in *BAK and remove these as well
