a friend has just bought a huge plasma screen tv and mentioned something about the plasma only having a life of 10,000 hours ,what will happen after then ? will the picture fade? not work? can it be replaced or do you have to buy a new telly? i am also toying with the idea of getting one but it's an awful lot of money to fork out on something that will only last 3-4 years ,

depending on your financial situation and also how much you really need one,i would hang on.

the reason being that plasmas are really starting to catch on but hot on their heels is the newer and better lcd technology.this will do 2 things :-

1 force plasma prices down

2 make lcd tv's more price competitive quicker

We recently bought a 14" LCD TV, (Samsung) and really like the quality of the picture.  The sound is terrible though, since I think the manufacturer expects to sell you a surround sound system as well. In fact I bought an inexpensive set of computer speakers with sub-woofer, plugged them into the ear-phone jack and they work really well. (We use the unit for the kitchen).  We were told that the LCD is susceptible to heat and the vents at the top and bottom of the back of the unit must be kept dust and obstacle free.  Additionally, the failure of one or more pixles on the unit is indicated by their inability to change color.  The unit's warranty covers this, but was told they don't fix it in the event of failure, but just provide a new unit (1 year), since repairs aren't easy to do...Ahh... new technology!
If it reaches 11 months it'll have to happen an accident with the deep fat fryer..
Hope you have got your figures wrong. 10000 hours at 5 hours per day is just over a year. Did you mean 100000 hours?
Plasma screens only last a couple of years due to the technology. Not worth buying one really in my opinion. Rear projector or LCD screens are the future.
If that is true, I would consult a solicitor to get my money back.
Does that mean I can get money back on my car when it breaks down?

"Hope you have got your figures wrong. 10000 hours at 5 hours per day is just over a year. " Surely 10000 divided by 5 is 2000 which equates to roughly 5.4 years at 5 hours per day.

The figures I have seen for Plasma screens are 20000 hours and 40000 for LCD.

Theoretically the screens can be re-gassed but the infrastructure to do so has not been set up yet

There is a major difference between a plasma screen tv and a car. A new car is advertised as being capable of keeping going indefinitely. If there is nothing stated on the advertising pages for plasma screen tv's (whether it is in the small print or not) there should be because the dealers are misleading everyone. There should be a court case concerning it. Or at least it should be reported to the trade and industry.
