Transferring files and software from XP to W7

I currently work on an old (2003) vintage XP desktop. I am considering updating to a laptop with a far greater memory operating on Windows 7. Is there any way I can transfer my files and software. I rather doubt that this will be possible, but no harm in asking. (or is there?)

You say "files and software"

By Files do you mean your personal files (documents, pictures etc etc)?

By software do you mean the program you have installed?

Well the answer about "files" is of course you can.

There are a number of ways of doing this.
* You can copy the files to a memory stick and carry that across to your new computer,
* You can copy the files to an external hard drive and move that across to your new PC
*You can copy the files to CD or DVD and then put that CD/DVD in your new computer and copy the files from that onto your new PC.

They are the simplest options.

Transfering the software to the new PC is almost impossible, you cannot "move" or "transfer" software to a new PC.

Software will need to be INSTALLED on the new computer, and you do this by either using the CD or DVD that came with the software, or from the "install file" if you downloaded it from the internet.

One other way to move files from one PC to another is to set up a small "network" (I have mentioned this separately as if you are not very technical you can ignore it).

If you have a ROUTER in your house you can plug BOTH computers into the router and then copy personal files directly from one computer to the other.

There is some "setup" required to be able to do this, so if you think you want to try it then ask for more info.
