i have just managed to be able to watch films on my laptop by putting them through my tv (lcd), but so far they all begin to go 'jittery' after about 30-45 mins...the sound is fine and the synching is fine, but the picture seems to be as though many of the frames are missing - it gets worse, but seems sometimes seems to right itself for a few moments

any ideas? is there a setting on the computer or tv i need to adjust?

the seem to play fine on the computer

cheers

It could be a copyright protection problem. Are they legal film downloads?

but they play on the computer ok...
Your computer would be able to identify whether you are trying to make a copy, and prevent it, whereas if you are playing through a TV, you may have it linked to a DVD recorder whereby you could make copies.
Are you running both displays at the same time when it's connected to the TV? if so try switching the laptop display off totally and just run the TV as a single display on its own.
As the fowl fellow says, if you're running both displays at once then the GPU has a lot more work to do in rendering the frames
