Can anyone recommend a cheap (if not free) Internet Service Provider?

Then follow info/instructions from there. Provides free internet access after 8pm right through the week. It does have a one-hour cut-off time but so do most of the free ISPs.
If you have an NTL account you can get 24/7 internet access but have to phone them to order a CD and then register on your machine. It takes quite a while for the CD to arrive - three months in my case. (this may be improved now). If u r not an NTL customer you can still get free internet access with them provided you spend at least �10 a month on calls with them. (they give you a device or code to dial in before the number you call, works with BT lines).
There are many cheap ISPs. Totalise (www.totalise.net) provide a dial up to an 0845 (local call) number and I've found connection with them reliable and fast. It just provides a dial-up and no other software (as far as I know) but as most PCs come with Internet explorer this isn't
