I don't know why but something about it just got to me and i slept with the light on for about a week! I watched the original japanese version sometime after but didn't find it as scary as i already knew the story (the japanese version does explain more).
If you want to see another scary film in the same style as the ring and the grudge you must watch the korean film 'a tale of two sisters', its out on dvd now and it really scared me.
The bit that scared the living Bejesus out of me was when they found the girl in the cupboard with that look of abject horror on her face! I'm easily scared by things that involve faces, I'm afraid (hell, even the twisted mush at the beginning of the X Files has me diving behind the sofa!)
I think they're going for the 'horror that could come true' angle with this one. It made me wary of my TV for a good couple of hours ;) It's the whole 'crossing over into reality' thing that makes it scary.
That said, if 'The Ring' had that effect on me, I dread to think what 'White Noise' is gonna do...!
Silencium, white noise did have a few jumpy moments but it was nowhere near as scary as the ring.
As for you being wary of your t.v, I watched the ring on video at a friends house and she actually got up in the middle of the night to lock the video tape in her car so that the girl couldn't come out of her tv!
