Not sure if this will help as have Word myself but have you tried stting the margins of the page bigger than the page itself then resizing the table?
use the table and decrease the margins (slide the margin markers to the edge in the rulers at the top and left edge of the page.)

er......??

quick reply sophie - but not sure what you mean.
on my lovely old publisher 97 (yeah i know, but i liked it!) you could show the horizontal and vertical rulers, and then centre them.

ok, hang on ........
Sorry, should have explained myself- do what Chuck says!
Question Author
i don't know what i did - but it definitely wasn't right!
What chuck means is that you go into the page setup menu and reduce your margin widths to zero all round - less if you can (ie, a minus figure). Using the sliders at the top and at the left hand side are another way of doing that.
Why not use 4 text boxes (called Text Frames in OpenOffice)

Create a Text Frame (text box) by going to
Insert
...Frame

Under the 'Type' tab, set width to (e.g.) 8 cm, Anchor to 'Page' and then under the 'Borders' tab, set borders to zero.
Do that 4 times, (or copy/paste the first one)
Drag each to where you want them on the page.

To get text to automatically flow from one textbox to another, do this . . .

Click the edge of a frame that you want to link. Selection handles appear on the edges of the frame.

1. On the Frame bar, click the Link Frames icon (chainlinks icon on toolbar).
2. Click the frame that you want to link to.

NB The frame you want to link to must be empty.

The text frames can be re-sized by clicking on the edge and dragging one or more handles.
