Much has been written on this subject most of it detrimental.

But I read somewhere last week that we use the principal of permanent magnets to help power some of the offshore wind turbines.

Because we are not solely using magnets to power the wind turbines but only as an aid when the strength of the wind is not fully sufficient does this method seem feasible?

This new advanced technology information has been released in only the last couple of months, its operation is active in the field right now. You can look it up!
A generator is a misnomer. Generators just convert one form of energy, such a mechanical, to electrical. It takes power to create power, and invariably you have to put more in than you get out. No generator is 100% efficient and most often significantly less . . .

An interesting video :

http://www.energy.sie.../new-wind-turbine.htm

Maybe the engineers can explain it

The magnets don't power the wind turbine, the wind does.
Take one magnet.
Take one conductor.

Let them lie for as long as you like . . . Result: Nothing.

Now move the conductor past the magnet (or magnet past the conductor) and you will be able to detect a current in the conductor (eg by using a galvanometer).

Result: Movement (Kinetic Energy) in, electricity out.
No wind, no electricity.
The magnets are only part of the means of bringing about the conversion. They don't provide the energy.

Siemens are not a tin pot company. They produce most of our wind turbine machinery. They use permanent magnets to generate energy to keep the wind turbines moving in periods of low wind speed. The proof is there! There is obviously no need for them when the wind is strong enough. But this happens for only 64% of the time.

Siemens have demonstrated its possible to keep the wind turbines operating for nearly 100% of the time by using permanent magnets.
Sorry I wasted time watching that very bad Siemens video, which told us nothing at all.
Rov.. there appears to be a misunderstanding here. Alternators such as those used in wind turbine electricity generators are normally of the self exciting type. They work like this, a little residual magnetism in the iron cores of the field coils is sufficent to generate a little current which is fed back to the field coils. This enables the generation of more current and so on until the field coils are working at full strength and the alternator is producing enough voltage and power to supply the grid. The use of permanent magnets instead of or as well as electromagnetic field coils means that at low wind speeds the need to use some of the power to feed the field coils is avoided so this power can be fed directly to the grid. There is nothing new in using permanent field magnets, they are used in bicycle dynamos, their drawback is that they are heavy, bulky and expensive.I suspect that siemens are using a hybrid system to get a bit more power at low wind speeds although sacrificing output at high windspeeds.

Thanks Jomifl, having no knowledge of engineering systems I was wondering how and what they were trying to achieve, thats all.
In one of today's national newspapers, a journalist who has studied wind farms for 9 years states that ' .......immense human and ecological catastrophe being inflicted on northern China by the extraction of the rare earth minerals needed to make the giant magnets that every turbine in the West uses to generate its power'. There are several other disturbing facts he has quoted.
1. ....so many people are now realising that the wind bonanza is one of the greatest scams of our age.
2.....wind turbines are ludicrously inefficient.
3.....CO2 reduction achieved by turbines is so insignificant that one large wind farm saves considerably less in a year than is given off by a single jumbo jet flying daily between Britain and America.
4. Politicians want us to spend £100 billion on building 10,000 more turbines, plus another £40 billion to connect them all to the Grid. Another £100 billion on conventional power stations to provide backup.
