Click Start > Run
Type 'msconfig' (without the quote marks into the box and hit 'Enter' (or click 'OK').
Click on the 'Startup' tab.
Click to remove the ticks alongside programs you don't want to run when you boot your PC.
Click 'Apply' and 'OK'
Restart your PC. When you see a message telling you that you're using 'Selective startup', accept the 'Do not show this message again' option.

The foregoing applies to all versions of Windows, except 7., where he first step is slightly different:

Download the latest version of Glary Utilities it has a startup manager in one of its modules so you can check which programs start on startup and you can disable them or delay them if you wish. Also it will tell you if the program is needed on start or if is an illegal one and can be deleted. www.glaryutilities.com
Another thing to speed up the starting time besides trimming your startup list is to check the HDD for free space and the level of fragmentation. See if your system files are fragmented badly and in need of a defrag. If so you may need to get a defragger that defrags the system files as well. (Windows does not) Good Luck.
Hi Andy
Got this "freebie" from my Computeractive magazine recently - "Soluto". Just go to www.soluto.com and download the prog. It will tell you how long the boot up takes and then divides the progs into 3 sections i.e. No Brainer (safe to remove the app), Potentially Removable (for more advanced users) and Required (self explanatory. Have a look and keep us informed if you like it.
