can anyone tell me how the heck you put an underscore under text?

You mean underline text,

or to type an underscore: _   ?

 

If you use Internet Explorer then you should have a toolbar under the "type your answer here" on this site.

 

Look just above the word underline if this link works.

Plus you can use the short-cut command by pressing 'Ctrl' and 'U'.  You can also get the Bold (Ctrl B), Italic (Ctrl i) commands too.
