Can you play Blu Ray discs on a DVD player (obviously the picture would not be HD) and can you play them on an x box? Thanks

I asked this question of several people recently. They gave me a funny look and then quite decidedly said "No sir - you can't".

I wondered because you can play a DVD on a Blu Ray player. I meant to test this out earlier but I forgot (and the DVD player and x box are in my son's room and he's asleep).
No.
This is a format very different to DVD, and DVD players are not forward compatible. BD Players backward compatible though, to enable them to play any DVD.
If you want to view Blu Ray sherrardk, then you have to have a Blu Ray player. I found this out when I was thinking of buying Blu Ray discs from Amazon so I asked around the shops.

hi both - bought for my husband for Christmas.
I hope he's pleased sherrardk!

To be fair, with the weather and the children being off school, I got him to buy it for himself so I have no idea what it cost (but expect that it cost more than the one I would have bought for him).
Ah - I'll bet he is pleased with it then!
Sorry! Around £70 delivered on eBay .. Philips good value.
Will replace DVD player.
If you buy a Blu-Ray player I'm sorry to tell you this but you will need to update your tv to an H/D ready machine ( a blue ray player comes equipped with HDMi socket NOT Scart so you would be unable to connect Blu Ray to a standard tv.
