I use windows sidebar gadgets, currently three running
1) countdown clock to an important event
2) Clock set to UK time
3) Clock set to Bangkok time (Son lives out there)
The resources they use are negligible, but I've got a high spec pc and it doesn't cause a problem.

You can see what processing power any particular application is using by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete to enter the task manager, and then clicking on 'Processes'. Look under the 'CPU' column to see what percentage of the available processing power each process is using. (I'd be surprised if anything in Windows Gadgets ever got above 1%. You might find that the CPU usage is so low that the figure is actually rounded to 0%).
