I have ripped a number of tracks from a CD, and burnt them onto a blank CD-R disc,

Upon playing them back I find they are not playing in the order that they were burnt.

Could anyone please tell me the reason for this?

Two instant possibilities spring to mind ...

Did they arrange themselves in alphabetical order before you burned the CD?

Has your player been set to 'Random'?
Did you burn them as MP3s onto the CD?

If so then the mp3 files (as will all files) will be sorted into alphabetical order by default.

If you are burning them as MP3s the best option is to name the tacks so they start with the track number at the beginning of the name (using two digits, so 01, 02 03 and so on) then they'll play in the order you want.

Thanks so much chaps, interesting to know that MP3s act this way< I will try the number system.
There is software available that will enable you to burn them non-alphabetically, but it's really just easier to number the tracks in the order you want them to play, as Chuck rightly says.

Thanks for getting back.

I have tried again and the tracks listed have no name just track numbers from an un-known CD.

So I started at track 1 then onto track 2 and so on to track 15, they went down in this order in the burning list.

Also in the pending and writing list, but when the CD was complete they played in any order each time I played the new CD.

I also took into consideration your suggestion that the player was set at random, well I was using Windows Media Player and playing them through my computer speakers.

Is there any way that this can be set to play in order?
CTRL + H should change the shuffle mode.
WMP will play tracks in the order they appear on the playlist ...

Start WMP and click Play, then make certain the 'Shuffle' option in un-ticked.
.. or CTRL+H, lol
Question Author
Where do I find this shuffle option Naz, because I don't like using the keys because I like to see where I can change it back if anything goes wrong.
The menus at the top of the screen in WMP ... Click the one that says 'Play' and it'll drop-down with a list of options. Shuffle is there with a tick-box next to it.
Problem is AOG there are so many different version of WMP and different views available for it that where one persons is might not be where yours is.

For most recent versions, and if you have it on full view it's here

(excuse small label, it's at the bottom just to the left of the play button)
That said ... CTRL H will toggle it on, and CTRL H will toggle it off again.
Good point Chuck, I'm using Version 11.0.6....
