arghhh, got no media player

Perhaps you could repost your question explaining exactly what you are trying to do, and what the symptoms are.

Well, I've looked through your posts in both this thread and the one linked by SlackAlice, and I can't find anywhere where you've described your actual problem in any detail that allows a reasonable chance of diagnosis.

Why don't you take a deep breath, sit down with a cup of tea or coffee, and take a few minutes to tell us exactly what you are doing, what response you are getting, etc.

At the moment it's a bit like someone phoning the doctor and saying "There's something wrong with me" and expecting to get a cure.

my WMP was working fine until an automatic update was installed on my computer, I didn't realize this had happened until I went to play a album and I got an error message saying Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file., the album cover shows for a few seconds and then this message comes up.
I have done a command prompt and this didn't show as having a problem, I have gone to the Microsoft site and downloaded a patch, half way through that, I get a message saying the patch was only suitable for XP an lower versions, I tried downloading WMP12, the latest version, still nothing, I have gone into Device Manager, unchecked it, did a reboot the re-checked it, rebooted again , and still it doesn't work, I downloaded this album onto my ipod then onto my memory stick, they were in MP4 format and as I was wanting a CD of it I converted the files to MP3 , I purchased the album legally by the way, I tried after this to play one of the other albums which have played without bother in the past, and they won't play either?

Unchecked what? Windows media player is a program, not a device, and so does not appear in the device manager. I get the impression that there is some confusion as to whether you problem is with WMP or with your sound card.

How (with what software) did you convert the files to mp3?

So that we can eliminate one problem at a time, I suggest that you first check that your sound card is working - if it is we can forget device manager and concentrate on WMP and the mp3 itself.

The easiest way to check that your sound card is working is:
Control panel
Sounds
Go to Sounds tab
click on one of the items in the list (eg asterisk)
If the Test button is enaboled, click it and check that you get a sound. If it's not, click the button to the left of it, choose any sound from the list. Then click the test button.

Report back your results, and we'll take it from there

I was unable to ask you anything more regarding the problem I was having, I have done a full restart back to FS and now I am up and working again perfectly, thank you for your help with this, it was very much appreciated
