Can anyone suggest somewhere reasonably handy from the airport that provides clean beds at a modest cost - we want to pick up a hired car and crash out on arrival. Also, on the way back we might choose to have our last hours in town so somewhere (not necessarily same place) with good access to the centre/sights (i.e. probably by public transport) would be useful.

nothing specific, but there are motels all over the USA, and when on a driving holiday I've never had any trouble finding one to stay in. Might be worth asking the people at the rental car counter what areas not to drive through, though.

Why not try Tysons Corner which is not too far from the airport. A lot of BA cabin crew stay overnight there after a flight but not sure of the cost. Good luck and have a nice trip.

If its a weekend try the Springhill Suites Herndon Reston VA 20170. 5 miles from Dulles free parking, breakfast and high speed internet $70 - $90 for suite with 2 double beds. Go to www.marriot.com
