When is best time to go? which areas are nicest? Any other suggestions or advice appreciated, Thanks.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I would recommend Villamoura, it is totally unspoilt and untacky, but there are nice restaurants and bars to visit at night. It has a harbour and lots of luxury yachts moored there, including some celebrities.

Alvor is also nice, it is a little fishing village

The trouble with Villamoura is that it is purpose built and does not give you a real taste of Portugal and the Algarve.
The best time to go is anytime, we have just got back and when we left it was 18 deg and sunny.
Try getting the train from Faro to Lagos where it's lovely or go the other way towards Spain and get off at Vila Real or Monte Gordo.
