Where is a cheap but central place to stay in Barcelona?

You should be able to find somewhere in and around Las Ramblas - they look pretty grotty outside but are usually ok inside.

yer stay around the las ramblas area but beware of the pickpockets, had trouble a few times down there

And also be very aware of the beautiful "girls" they are usually male hookers!!!
