I am a 56 year old .and have always wanter to go to Australia to see my Aunty who is now 86
my husband wont come with me ,as he says its too far.I have been and got all the flight details .and the money to pay .the only thing is that i m really, really nervous about going on my own..
I told my Aunt that i was planning to come over to see her .and she has tried to put me off not to come all that way ,shes to old now and she would only worry about me being by myself.
Do u think that i m selfish In going and not respecting her wishes ..Has anyone else been in this situation

Tell yourself that's exactly what you're going to do: Take a holiday and see a fascinating part of the world.
Tell your aunt that's exactly what you're determined to do. i.e, you're going to Oz to enjoy yourself. Then point out that it would rather silly if, while you were there, you failed to visit her.
That way your aunt won't feel guilty that she's dragging you half way around the world. Instead she'll understand that you'd like to see her while enjoying the holiday of a lifetime.
Go! Go! Go!
You'll never regret it!

Not quite the same but my Mum decided to go to Australia to see her stepfamily when she was 70, She has epilepsy after a stroke but was determined. I tried to put her off because I was worried about her travelling alone. She had a great time with stepson and family and they were so pleased to see her. I felt guilty for trying to put her off. I say if she can do it you can.
Hi Sylvia, my Dad was 69 when he visited me (from UK) when I lived in Oz. First time he'd flown. I did 2 return trips on my own. As long as you keep your wits about you, you should be alright. Maybe your Aunty has other concerns (i.e. her ability to cope or something similar) that she doesn't want to admit to. Getting a long-term visitor when you are 86 could be a bit daunting. Try to find out if there are any other reasons before you make your mind up. Liz
Maybe your aunt is feeling to old or infirm to be able to cope with someone visiting her for a length of time. It can be quite stressful having someone you don't really know visiting and it's not quite like popping over to the next town for a day.
There may be a number of reasons that she would rather not have you stay. It is a long journey, we arranged to be met at the airport by a guide who took us to our hotel and arranged a half day tour of Perth/Freemantle. How long are you thinking of going for, and do you intend to stay in an hotel? I'm not very good at making conversation with people when I'm out and about so I think I would have been lonely travelling on my own.

It's a hard one sylvia - does your aunt know you well? I wonder if she's worried about why you are going - she sounds unselfish in being concerned about you (young person that you are to her!) - but I think gran may be right, she may be worried about how she's going to entertain you, even if that's not really your plan.
