Hiring a boat

May not be a travel question per se but it seems the most relevant place for this question.

I live near london and wish to hire a small boat for my familly for just one day. could be a motorboat or a sailboat or whatever, but not something like a barge or a canoe. We could go on the thames or to the seaside or wherever.

Do i need a license? I do not want to hire a 'captain' as well.

Where can i hire a boat? I have been searching on google and it seems like boat hire companies don't exist. But surely they must
