i have a few hours in london on tuesday afternoon, with my 10 year old daughter. I don't want to be wandering around deciding what to do on the day, as that will waste time.
Could anyone recommend something?
(we are already booked to go to Buckingham Palace the next day)

was just going to suggest that myself Chris.
Have been looking at it myself since you posted it last time - a must me thinks
You can get a No 9 Bus from Aldwych (walk up to the Strand from Covent Garden and turn left) which takes you to the Albert Hall Kensington -- you can walk down to the Science Museum from there. Enjoy ! If you happen to go to Trafalgar Square/Leicester Square, go to Panton Street (between Leicester Square and Haymarket) and eat at The Stockpot. Good English Cheap Food !

That does sound great Chris. x
open bus tour.
I would definitely avoid Mme Tussauds. We had visitors from Germany here last week and having paid £27 to get in they saw hardly anything as it was so crowded. Covent Garden would be my choice taking in Trafalgar Square nearby - always good for people watching and my niece when she was young used to love the National Gallery and Portrait Gallery.
I took my six-year old niece to London for the day a fortnight ago, crisgal. We went to the Natural History Museum (free) and then to their Butterfly Tent out on the lawn (£3.50 each for entry), and she loved both. Then we went to Buckingham Palace and to lunch at the Rainforest Café (http://www.therainforestcafe.co.uk/), which is expensive, but the look on her face... :) We went to Hamley's Toy Store aftewards and were in there for about three hours, as she wanted to watch all of the displays they put on with the toys and make sure she'd seen everything they had before she decided what to spend her pocket money on. After that, we went for ice creams in Trafalgar Square. It was a gorgeous day and she loved the fountains.

It was her "best day ever", apparently, if that helps, but not sure if there'll be a difference in what they like, given your daughter being slightly older. Hope you have a fab time with her. My niece slept until midday the next day. :)
I enjoyed the Duck Tour which we joined near Waterloo

You drive around London a bit and go along the Thames. Good fun.
The science museum used to have lots of hands on displays for kids.
