For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It depends if you want city centre or suburbs but hostel wise and to start off really central Wake Up is good, all the facilities you need and not too much of a shock to the system if you've not stayed in hostels before. Plus the bar downstairs is always really lively.
The YHA in Glebe is good as it's a really funky area but walking distance to the city and to avoid the crowds at Bondi but be near a beach go for anywhere in Coogee or a boat ride away at Manly.
Everywhere is pretty good as long as you stay away from Surry Hills, Central Station and Redfern! The HostelWorld website is usually great.
For $74 a night you can stay at the Y On the Park Hotel, which is very central. They also have pricier deluxe rooms:
