I don't know for certain, but I really can't see how - as you said, signs and things.
And not that I've taken a test since the 70,s but doesn't part of the test now mean reading stuff.

According to the driving test you are given 3 chances of reading no plates at varying distances, if you cannot you have failed the eye test and the driving test is over.

Yeah but that's letters and numbers which can be learnt - I meant doesn't taking the test now mean reading and answering multiple choice questions before you even do the driving bit.

As for signs, they use icons and imagery rather than words, so no need to read. There are a lot of HGV drivers from the continent driving on UK roads who cannot read English.

If you search for "illiteracy" on DVLA site it comes up with some ministerial minutes which say, in effect, that as long as you can pass the test, you're OK. How you cope with the theory test I don't know . .

I don't know if they have introduced it yet but when I was doing lessons about a year and a half ago they were talking about changing the test slightly. During the test, after you have done all of your maneuvers (sp?) the examiner will ask you to follow the signs back to the test centre. They stop giving you directions.

Will he be able to make his own way back?

He'll be able to find his own way back the same way that people with no English and take the test in a foreign language do.
