yes there used to be short cruise to bay of Biscay i remember but then ive been around longer than you probably

I would think if it goes out of British waters you would need a passport, not sure though. The cruise company would tell you.

Always take a passport, not least for this reason... If the ship got into difficulty and had to call into a port, and could no longer continue with the cruise, you'd have to return overland from whatever country you'd ended up in. Getting through immigration, there, and also when entering the UK, would be no problem if you had your passport to wave at them. Otherwise, it could be difficult proving not only your identity, but also your nationality.

I think the one to the Bay of Biscay calls at Santander and you do need a passport

You'll need a passport to get out of the UK - even if you are on a not-get-off trip to Calais on the ferry, you'll still need to go through passport control this end.

You do not need a passport to leave British waters, I have done it dozens of times. I have also come back through customs without a passport. They can't keep you out if you are British. You do need to like a good argument though.

where do you go to, jomifl? My OH leaves the country every other day on the ferries or the channel tunnel, they always ask for his passport.

Boxtops, if you leave the country on a private yacht you can go more or less wherever you like and return wherever. The customs service is so undermanned that they won't visit your yacht even if you phone them.

I went t France a few years ago, just waved passport on outward journey, cming home had to show the passport. Passed them over, Official said can I have yours madam, I said you have it, he said you do not have a beard madam. He passed mine back, it was my brothers, he has a beard. We had rented a Gite in France for the whole family for Xmas, and somehow muddled up passports. Never looked at them after the holiday. Had a problem getting back into9 the country, taken to special holding area. Lots of questions and phone calls. It was a bit worrying at the time, Eventually let us back in though.

But 'they' are not UK immigration officials. There is no exit check save in alerts.

'They' are security officials or ferry company staff - or French immigration officials
