I have been invited to a friend's confirmation as a Priest in Malta. Not being a Roman Catholic and never having been inside a cathedral I am unsure of the appropriate dress code. The event is in mid July so it will be hot. Any suggestions appreciated.
For an occasion like that I'd cover arms, legs, and head. Maybe linen trousers or calf-length skirt, with a light long sleeved top - and a long voile scarf to go loosely over your head in the cathedral. If you're covered up, you can't go wrong.
Go with the linen trousers, long-ish sleeved top, and long voile scarf, (women's heads MUST be covered in Valleta cathederal (St. John's Co-Cathederal), as a right of entry on a normal day. For the confirmation of new RC priests in a Very catholic country, such as Malta, this will be the minmum expected for ALl the congregation.
that's new, Nibble, I was there five years ago and women didn't have to cover their heads (this is just as a tourist, not attending any sort of service). Maybe they've got more holy.
Get a dress that will fully cover you. Do not go for strapless for short dresses. Tea length dresses ill be a good option. Get some bolero style dresses to add style to your dress. Two piece dresses are also good. If you are going to wear black or white dress then think twice. These color dresses have their own meaning in different culture.
