Cheap things to do/see in Venice.

I am travelling to Venice on 21 May and need some ideas for cheap things to see and do whilst I am there.  Any ideas?  I know the City can be expensive.

Walking around sight-seeing is about the cheapest.  It will be very expensive.  I was there one February and it was cheapish - went back  one summer and crikey couldn't believe how expensive it all was.  Still a beautiful city - enjoy it. Try to get hold a students' guide (ie Europe on ? cents a day) it's gone up since my time - but very useful.

Get as far away from the Grand Canel/St Marks as possible. Venice has more streets and alyways than London - and of course they're all traffic free!
