We're off to Italy in couple of weeks, and plan on taking about �1000 worth of Euros. Is it still advised to take some cash but most in travellers cheques? Will I get charged for changing travellers cheques into cash?

I would certainly recommend taking some cash with you, maybe �100 or �200.

If you take Euro travellers cheques then you shouldn't have to pay to change them, as you will no doubt have paid a fee in the bank where you bought them.  However, this may not be the case if you change them in your hotel, but banks should change then commission free.

If you take sterling cheques, then chances are you will have to pay commission where ever you go.

We usually take all cash - especially if holiday 2 weeks or less.
Too much hassle changing TC's.
Some places in France will not accept travellers cheques as they do so like to be difficult to us brits.

We normally take about �50 in Sterling and the equivalent in Euros and use the "hole in the wall", so you only use what you need.
