To listern to my ipod shuffle on take off and landing to help drown out the noises the plane makes this being the worst part of flying for me I'm not to bad once we are up there

they tell you to switch off all electronic devices.
no I dont believe you can... as I think they like you to be 'gadget free' during those times...
As jno said, all electronic equipment off, on our way back from Boston a drunk chap kept refusing to turn his iPad off, he was threatened with having the police meet him at the gate.

Ok thanks earplugs it is for me then
They may not let you use earplugs. Most aircraft crashes happen during the takeoff or landing phases and they therefore like you to be able to hear any instructions.

I've never heard of anyone being asked to remove earplugs, though.
