we are traveling with ryan air in the near future,are they as strict regarding hand luggage as some people say?

There`s one reason and one reason only why Ryanair are strict about bags - money. If the bag is too big they can make you put it in the hold and charge you for it. They don`t do it to save time on turnarounds. It takes longer to take a bag off someone, tag it and put it in the hold then it does to leave the passenger with it.

Airlines often specify that only LARGE items should be placed into the overhead lockers, with all other items being placed under the seat in front. (The only exception is where passengers are sitting by the emergency exits, where all bags have to be put into the lockers). easyJet stated exactly that on my flights to and from Amsterdam a couple of days ago.

So (with the exception of people sitting by the exits) , the correct place to put hand baggage is under the seat in front. The lockers should only be used if that's simply not possible.

Although Ryan Air is cheap, it can really be quite stressful due to all their strict policies, which is a result of the low rates, of course. Other airlines like British Airlines might be a bit more expensive, but it can be worth it in the long run as they tend to be more flexible. I have flown Ryan Air a number of times, and as long as you abide by their rules then they are fine. I don't understand why you need to wear your camera round your neck all the time. I travel with a hand luggage bag and a handbag. Ryan Airs rules are that only one hand luggage bag is permitted. I just make sure that there's enough room in my larger bag to take my handbag. All the way round the shops, cafe, toilets etc in the airport I have my handbag separate from the larger bag. It is only when boarding the aircraft that I slot my handbag into the larger bag. As soon as I'm on board I can take my handbag out again. Surely you can do similar with your camera?

spudqueen you are spot on, I go with Ryanair about 3 times a year and have never had any problems, 10 kg in a cabin bag 55x40x20 holds everything I need inc my laptop, learn to travel light, it's a lot easier.

Well I bought a new Cabin suitcase the other week and it says on the label " Most airline approved size" . Great I thought.,went on line yes ok for easyjet ,ryanair ect .ect. BUT not for Virgin.!! It is too big! And who are we flying with..............yes Virgin.!!
