we are traveling with ryan air in the near future,are they as strict regarding hand luggage as some people say?

they usually have metal frames at check-in and if your bags look big they'll ask you to put them into a frame. If they don't fit, you've got a problem. Sometimes they may not bother if your bag looks about right, but I wouldn't count on it happening.

If there is a charge for going over I'm pretty sure they will enforce it.

they will make you class it as hold luggage if it's too big for the cabin

its all a bit confusing to the aged, they will not allow you to have your camera round your neck it must be in your luggage,wish now we had picked another airline and paid more.

Yes they are. If you plan on using something in the airport then putting it inside your cabin bag before check in make sure you measure the fully loaded bag at home for overall dimensions and weight.
They have an operative who patrols the queue with a sizing cage, checking carry on bags.

If Ryanair can charge you for anything, they will.

They have seriously considered charging for use of the toilets in the past, but haven't worked out a way to - yet.

They are very strict on size and weight and everything has to go in your hand luggage , even your handbag !

Not only Ryanair...Easyjet can be just as bad...I know from past experience.They also charge £50 ifor putting hand luggage(if too large) in the hold.
A word of warning...I have travelled to Majorca many times with Easy...and they are really strict in Palma de Mallorca Airport.
Having said this,sometimes it depends who you get on the check-in and gate.

My experience of ryanair is that their staff are treated miserably and are goaded into passing on the pain in order to survive in the job. So they will do whatever petty unpleasantness is in their ever-changing handbook - and charge you for every instance. One of the reasons I avoid travelling with this company at all costs is the all-pervading atmosphere of wretchedness casts a pall over my journey, and as I enjoy travelling I resent Ryanair attempting to spoil it for me.

we flew from Manchester and people were taking on large carry on bags and nobody checked size or weight. Coming back from Beauvais there was a check but not as stict as I expected. I think you just take a chance on the day

I have only ever seen Ryanair being strict with hand luggage - they are at the passport control /boarding parts with the metal frames and weighing and also ensuring nobody carrying on anything extra. You can pop your camera in your bag just while you go on to the aircraft but then take it out!

Don't, whatever you do, "take a chance on the day" !
As you line up for boarding, one of their staff moves along the queue checking hand luggage, and they are insistent on having only one item. What you do once you've cleared that hurdle is up to you.

Ryanair are desperate to take off on time (so they don't have to put so many shillings in the parking meter), so they're unlikely to waste time checking everyone's luggage, just any that look obviously bulky. But as said, don't take chances.

And for heaven's sake - print out your boarding passes!

Many staff who appear to be working for Ryanair (because they're wearing their uniforms) are actually working for handling companies. Those in the UK seem to be reasonably strict about the dimensions of luggage. (After all, the bags must fit into the overhead lockers). But some overseas staff are less so. However they're ALL very strict about enforcing the 'one bag only' rule. (Laptops, handbags, airport purchases, etc must ALL be placed inside a SINGLE bag).

Ryanair keep their fares low by maximising the number of flights each aircraft makes in a day. They only allow 25 minutes from landing to take-off. During that time they've got to get 200 passengers and their luggage off the aircraft, and another 200 passengers and their luggage on again (plus refuelling, pumping out the loos, restocking the galley and carrying out pre-flight checks). They can't afford to have people fighting over inadequate locker space because some people won't play by the rules.

On that overhead storage thing Chris, Mrs 9401 flew Ryanair from Edinburgh to Alicante last Monday and reported no storage available so had to slink her (legit) bag under the vacant seat in front of her.
Maybe their calculations are flawed. :)
