We're going to Barcelona and need a hotel for 2 nights. We want something inexpensive but not as awful as some of the budget ones we've seen. We need somewhere fairly central or la ramblas, as we need to meet friends. I'd much sooner have a personal recommendation than look at trip advisor. We got steered in the wrong direction with that 2 years ago. Recommendations must have been written by relatives! Thank you.

Check prices through laterooms and lastminute - I got a very good deal.

Try the Hotel Inglaterra, just off the top of Las Ramblas. Stayed there 3 times now and it hasn't disappointed, good value too, excellent breakfast. 10 mins walk to the Aerobus stop in Plaza Catalunya for the bus to/from the airport.

We stayed at the Continental Palacete a couple of years ago. https:/ /www.ho telcont inental .com/ho telcont inental palacet e/en
It is a bit quirky(!), very pink with a dining room/lounge in the style of Versailles!!! (but the furniture wasn't). However, it was clean, staff were helpful, 24 hr buffet including drinks (alcohol included), you could take a couple of bottles of water out if going out for the day etc. I'd stay there again no problem. There is a taxi rank outside the door and the fare to the cruise ship when we were there in 2008 was €21. Its just north of the Placa de Catalunya (about a 5 min walk), but its sister hotel (the Continental) is on Las Ramblas if you'd rather be in the heart of things.
