what would you call "too expensive"?
Pack a picnic and drive down to pleasure wood hills its an american theme park.

Go to the beach it has lovely clean beaches, other than that sorry but great yarmouth is a dive
Spent a week there one weekend! Hope you have a good time - I absolutely hated it and would never go again. However, with grandchildren, your experience will be quite different from mine.
If the weather's good most children are happy on the beach with a bucket and spade, a picnic and an ice cream. If not mine like to draw and play guessing games. Hope you have a great time. xx
Go to Cromer.
Great Yarmouth makes Morecambe look like oop-market looxurie.......
Zacs has it right Cromer is far better
Bee's going to Great Yarmouth.....so not much point telling her that everywhere else is better. You have a good time Bee and enjoy the time with the grandkids x
I agree with Zac too - I lived in Gorleston for a while (shaney country by the way)
Ta.
The children will love Gt Y. (Cromer on the other hand is for the older generation)

A day on the beach, a day at Pleasurewood Hills, another day on the seafront in the amusements, on Britannia Pier and up and down Regent Road, Africa Live (zoo), a day inland at Bewilderwood, a day inland on the Norfolk Broads at Wroxham and Wroxham Barns, another day at the seafront (!) this time the model village and the pleasure beach, a day at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, a train ride into Norwich and back, all great fun for kids and not hugely expensive.

Yes parts of Yarmouth are run down, but go with the spirit of the traditional seaside holiday, see it from a kids point of view and with a sunny day and a bag of chips, you'll have a good time.
Assuming you are driving, do avoid the seafront for parking, its very expensive there. Either, go to the south end of the seafront and find the Nelson Hotel. There's free all day parking outside it and in the few street immediately around it; or park in the town and walk to the seafront.
Lowestoft is only a few miles away and it has lots of amusements and a decent beach. You can park just off Old Nelson Street for about £4.70 a day.

I think not far from there is Africa Alive. I don't know what it is, or how much but might be worth a google.

Thank you all for your good ideas. I totally agree that cromerand other places are better, we havent been to gt yarmouth since our kids were small hence I am a bit our of touch with kiddies things. There is no choice, for several reasons, as to where we are staying on this occasion. But thanks to you all I have ideas now as to what to do.
The children will love the Time and Tide Museum .It's great .Lots of interactive things for them to do .There's the Lydia Eva up the river atm .Old trawler, kids love it .There's the Marina Centre on the seafront if the weather is bad ,wave machine and flumes ,again great for children
Yes it is a bit ropey in parts but the beach is lovely and the council have pumped quite a lot of money into the Heritage aspect .
You can always cross the bridge and come along to our lovely little Edwardian resort of Gorleston .Another lovely beach with a paddling pool ,yacht pond and trampolines for the children .
Have a lovely time with your granchildren and I hope the weather is kind to you :)
Oh and PS ,there's also Sea Life which the children will love .

Someone has already mentioned Redwings Horse Sanctuary, which is slightly in land between Fritton and Bradwell. It's a lovely place to go, especially if the children like horses and donkeys - and it's free.
We have just come back from Gt Yarmouth , Pleasurewood Hills was too expensive for us would have cost £60 or more to get in. Best days were just on the beach
You can download some vouchers for different activities in GtY here

Another activity worth mentioning especially if you have a chilly or wet day is the Hippodrome Circus. (No animals) fantastic show for the whole family in an unusual purpose built circus building with an amazing water feature.
last time i went to gt yarmouth 60 years ago a bucket and spade kept me amused for a week
