Going to USA soon. I know they don't use the same system for mobile phones as we do. Can we use our mobiles there with a bought simcard? Or do we have to purchase/rent cellphones? What's the cost?

Your phone needs to be a quad-band model (and, of course, not locked to any network). If that's OK, then this should help:
