Where can I pitch a tent

Not a clue where to post this so I'll try here........

I'm taking my 2 lads away for a couple of days next week in a basic 3-man tent. I only want to sleep in it- food and cleanliness will be achieved elsewhere. I was shocked to find a camp-site near where I was planning to go wanted to charge 27.50 per night!!

Which leads to my question....where can I pitch my tent overnight without being classed as a trespasser? Can I use a lay-by or a wood?

Go and ask a farmer as they say nothing ventured nothing gained
Best to go for an official site, no matter how basic.  27.50 for 1 night is a total rip-off.

I've been camping for many years but only once on a site, for which I think I paid about 6.  I'm sure you will, but if you go to a farm, please clear up every scrap, and then he'll let the rest of us come later.
