Alternativel y, consider flying with Lufthansa from Birmingham (all year round) to Munich. There's a frequent train service from Munich to Salzburg, with journey times varying between about 1½ hours and 2 hours.

The only other flights from England direct to Salzburg are as follows:
BA: All year, from Gatwick
easyJet: Winter only, from Bristol, Gatwick, Liverpool & Luton
FlyBe: Winter only, from Southampton
Jet2: Winter only, from Leeds-Bradford & Manchester.
Monarch: Winter charter only, from Gatwick
Norwegian Air Shuttle: Winter only, from Gatwick (but not commencing until 13 December).
Ryanair: All year, from Stansted.
Thomas Cook: Winter only, from Gatwick & Manchester.
Thomson: All year, from Gatwick, Manchester & Newcastle. Plus winter only from Bristol, Luton & Stansted.
So, depending exactly where you are in the Midlands (and when you want to travel), Ryanair from Stansted might be your best option. There are direct trains to Stansted from Birmingham & Leicester:
