I've just got back from Cairo. I had to buy a visa at Cairo airport on arrival, cost 25 US dollars.
I didn't need one to go to Sharme el Sheik but someone else at the hotel needed one to be able to travel to Luxor
You pay on arrival and they stick a stamp on your passport. (If you're arriving at Sharm, and want to use the toilet, have some toilet paper with you - they're very mean with it there. Also some shoes to go into the sea with. The ocean floor off the beach is all dead coral. Ouch!).
Just a tip Curly, we returned from Egypt a few back, they tried the Weight con at the Airport, I would advise you to get a Digital Case Weigh device, they are spot on.
if you are just planning on staying in sharm and doing local excursions then you dont need to get a visa. they try to get you to pay for it on entry into egypt but you can ignore the queue and go straight through to passport control. You do however need one if you are planning any of the long trips outside of sharm i.e. luxor or cairo
Personally, I wouldn't ignore the queue.
If you are on a package holiday, it ought to tell you in your package documents what you need to do?
Also keep a pen with you when you leave to come home as you have to fill out an exit visa (free) handed to you with your boarding card that you have to fill out before you get to passport control.
naomi24 i have been for the last two years to sharm, the first time i queued up with everyone else only to be told we dont need a visa and the following year on the advice of seasoned sharm travelers that you can go straight through saving yourself about 30 mins of queuing.
dave, I'm a seasoned traveller to Egypt, but I haven't been to that area for a couple of years. Perhaps things have changed.
All the advice you need about visas and passport requirements for Egypt on the GOV.UK website.

As J-J indicates, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website is an excellent source of information.

For a 'belt & braces' way of seeking information about entry requirements though, I also like to consult the the appropriate website of the relevant national government (which could be their official tourist office or, more usually, their embassy or consulate). In this case, the website of Egyptian consulate in London states:
"Nationals from UK, EU and USA travelling to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resorts ONLY, for a maximum of 14 DAYS, do not require a visa prior to travelling as a free entry permission stamp will be granted upon arrival. If they intend to travel outside of the above mentioned areas they MUST obtain a Visa"

Thanks everybody! Some great tips there too!! :)
You do not need a visa for Sharm anymore. You still continue to need one for Hurghada.

I've just returned from my first trip to Egypt since the mid-90s, and the biggest, most significant change in the intervening years is the fact that the Russians have taken over en masse.

I like to meet other nationalities on holiday, but I have to say if I never meet a Russian again, it will be too soon; they are without a single shadow of a doubt the rudest, most obnoxious people it has ever been my misfortune to meet.
