Wedding Cake

When my son and future daughter-in-law married in June 2000 I made their wedding cake and they asked me to keep the top tier.  They intended this to be used for the Christening of their first baby.  The first baby was christened in 2002 but I overlooked the fact that we had the cake hidden away.  The second baby has just been christened and this cake is now over five years old.  It is still edible and I am wondering just how long a rich fruit cake will keep for. Has anyone eaten a cake that is any older?

My parents married in 1977 and they too saved their top layer, we re-iced it for their silver wedding and it was not only edible but highly delicious!

I too kept the top of my wedding cake and it was eaten when my first son was born nearly seven years later (but not at a christening as we are not Christians). It was just about edible - I found out later you are supposed to make some holes and add some sherry or brandy to moisten it first!
