There's lot of good hotels in Bruges I've been many times and know it well the Sofitel is very good and central, christmas will be busy and its not kept like us there's hardly any tinsel decorations mostly greenery and candles, but it has changed over the twenty five years I;ve been visiting and there are pubs and night spots for entertainment but its the culture and history I have studied a lovely place and like going back in time better book soon as only 101 days to christmas and all through the year Brugge is busy with a lot of Japanese visitors have a good time.
If you want to save money, don't stay in Bruges! Hotels in Bruges tend to be expensive all year round. Ostend, on the other hand, is a seaside resort so the hotels tend to be quiet (and cheap) outside the summer season. To get to Bruges takes just 13 minutes by train ( with a frequent service & cheap fares). Ostend is a lovely town (especially outside the summer season) with some great shops and hundreds of wonderful restaurants.
