I don't like Trip Advisor - it brings out the British need to moan without real cause.
I have stayed in hotels that TA rated as ropey and they were fine - both were for work, so I had no choice about staying there, but the comments were not justified.
I never read it, but the present Mrs Hughes scans it for any potential hotel, and worries if the reviews are not good.
If I am booking for myself, I will take my chances, but then, I am easily pleased!

Check the nationality of the posters.
Americans tend to be very fussy and criticise every tiny point, whereas Brits are more easy going.
I have contributed to Trip Avisdor for many years, and have used their recommendations for hotels and found the comments to be, in general, fair.
If it turns out to be awful, kick up a row immediately and insist on being moved to another hotel. Take pictures, and make sure the rep knows that you/your friends are going to take it much further if the situation is not resolved.

No...only pay half heed. The really bad ones are probably from their rivals and the really good ones are probably from their staff.
I stayed in a really nice hotel that only got 1 star because of a loose roof tile.
What I look for in TA is a hotel that answers people reviews. That shows they care. People really need to stop expecting 5* accommodation for 2* prices...

I heed it a little, but recently the one I used on holiday was less than great with a dour old lady in charge. I could not believe all the posters thought her to be 'lovely' I am a friendly person but she did not say more than two words to me and she never looked you in the eye. The breakfasts were not up to scratch and all was disorganized. Maybe she needs to retire.
I regularly contribute to TA with glowing, average and occasionally poor reviews. When looking I'd take all reviews into account, particularly the spread across the ratings. The worst reviews often make very amusing reading and sometimes need to be taken with a large pinch of salt.
If a particular complaint - being cold or dirty for example -came up repeatedly then I'd accept it to be fairly true.
