Passports

My 17 year old sons passport would be well out of date, his dad lost his last one! When I renew should I start a new application or say it was lost?

He'll be 18 when we travel.

It'll be cheaper and easier, they'll probably still have the details anyway

If he has EVER held a passport he must declare it lost and apply for a replacement. They will check and there will be problems if you just say it is a first passport. My son was in the same position he lost his passport years ago. The problem is someone could have your sons passport and use it to get another one. A passport is technically the property of the government , you are just the 'holder' you don't actually own it.

I'd agree with renewing a lost one, it's still going to cost the same as a new one though.

Could they trace his old passport from my passport number?

I don't mind the cost. If I remember correctly little peoples passports only lasted for 5 years?

They will trace his old passport from his name, date and place of birth and details of his parents, all that is on record. They can still trace it even if his parents had never held a passport.

Once they're 16 years old they get a 10 year one.

Not sure but I think you can apply for an adult passport from age 17 years and 6 months if you are going to use it to travel after your 18th birthday. The passport will be dated to start on his birthday.

^^ sorry rocky is correct, for passports 16 is the age when it changes from a child's passport to full passport.

Cool...this means I don't have to get copies of birth certs etc.

I lost mine so reapplied; but I had to report the loss to the police and produce the police form with my application. I don't know if this still applies.

I found it months later, but didn't bother telling anyone.

His dad lost it approx 10 years ago.

If you lose a passport it should be reported as soon as you lose it to avoid it being misused not wait till you actually need it.
