Well that was an interesting day.
Back in the 90s we used to take several holidays a year and on each trip I normally bought a bottle of whisky in duty free. They never cost must more than £25 or less.
Anyway roll on 20 years and I have 30 bottles of Malt that I don't drink and can't drink anymore due to health reasons.
So took them off auction and the auction house said expect between £15-£20 a bottle. So they were batches into 6 lots consisting of 3 or 4 bottles per lot.
Anyway sale starts and 1st lot £95, next lot £95, next lot £130 ...then next lot £1200 ! Errr why ? Auction house surprised also. So checked online when I got back home and it seems one of the bottles in a lot of 4 was worth £1260.
After commission buyer would have paid £1400 for lot.
Well that was a shocker.
Other lots sold for £230 and £160.

I Offered the whole lot to a friend for £400 three years ago. But he declined.

What a result.
I would not have paid more than £25 for any of them in duty free.

I took 22 bottles for sale and kept 8.
Will have to check other 8 now for a hidden gem.

Well the valuable one , is one of the ones I would have never thought of as being rare.
It was a bottle of Macallan 18 year old 1980 whisky.
So I guess I bought it in 1998 or 1999 in duty free and I guess it was a litre rather the 70cl. I didn't give it a second look as it left for auction.

Wish I had bought six bottles in duty free now :-)
Crazy money.
I need to check up why they have become rare ?
A lot of folks must have bought them in duty free.

Furniture at auction goes so cheap.
A lovely chest of drawers sold for £22.
With commission still less than £25.
I know what I'm doing next time we need furniture.

Well just to show off ...not making this up I promise.
Back in 1987 my wife, who was girlfriend at the time bought me a half sovereign ring for Christmas. I know it did not cost more than £50 at the time.
Anyway I did not really like it to be honest and wore it less and less until she did not notice and it went into the draw. Anyway last week I was looking at value of soveriegns and buying a 2017 coin. During research I looked at rare ones etc and history of soveriegns coins. I read the 1937 soveriegns are very rare. Humm I'm sure that ring has a 1937 coin in it. So dug it of drawer and it indeed is a 1937 half sovereign.
Bit question is ....is it the proper thing ?
So now need to look at cost or how to remove it from ring so I can get it verified. Fingers crossed ...

are you sure you need to remove it? Experts may be able to tell without doing so.
