I'm off to Rome soon, and although I have travelled in other countries as a lone pensioner without worries, there seems to be a lot of mention of bag- snatchers in guide books about Rome.
Should I be more than particularly careful?

London is worse than Rome. (or at least no better)
Pickpockets everywhere........were a money belt close to your skin !
Question Author
Funnily enough Mikey I picked up a brand new money belt in a charity shop the other day, so I think it's definitely coming with me.
Now looking for a money-belt. Where can one buy one, please?
I have been to Rome many times (albeit not recently) I wouldn't worry about it too much . A cross body bag will probably suffice
Thanks, Tony - I'll get busy! :)
Besides thieves another thing to watch out for in Rome is the traffic, especially when crossing roads there doesn't seem to be any rules !.
Thank you Tony - just ordered a money-belt from e-bay. :o) X
Well done, jourdain.
Bit beside the point but in the USA a 'Bum Bag' is called a 'Fanny Pack' The word 'Bum' has a different meaning somewhat similar to 'Tramp', so you can imagine what the US version of a Bum Bag would be! Another example of American English >
A girl I know was on holiday in Chicago USA, on her last day she said to the male Hotel desk clerk, ''I have to get an early flight so can you ,knock me up at 6am'' Poor girl did not realise that in the USA the phase 'Knock me up' means 'make me pregnant!'
Don't let these (true) reports of pickpockets in Rome put you off.....it really is the Eternal City, and everybody should see it at least once in their lives.

Back from Rome. Had a really nice time with no problems, but did notice that all women, and a lot of men, had their bags clutched very firmly, cross body.
