my fiance and i have just booked a holiday to egypt, we will be staying in hugharda, (the long beach hilton).  i know that this is about a 5 hour drive away from the pyrimids and about the same again to the vally of the kings, however, rather frustratingly, the travel agent couldn't tell us whether or not we would be able to get a trip to visit either of these places from the hotel. Also, we were told that we could hire a car, but i wasn't sure if this was safe to do seeing as most of the journey is across dessert, any suggestions?

your travel agent sounds a bit useless. You could try emailing the hotel at [email protected]

I'm sure you can arrange the trips you want, definately to the pyramids. The question is if you want to? Both are very long day trips and quite costly. In addition you are rushed round the sights as there is so much to pack in the day. I wouldn't recommend the valley of the kings in a day. The best bet is to enjoy the part of egypt you are off to and go back to egypt another time and do these bits specifically, you will then be able to see them properly, they are too good to be hurried.

Hi southportram,  One piece of general advice, don't even think about going into a desert in a car, any car even a jeep,  unprepared and without all the supplies and experience you need to survive an accident and loss of the vehicle.

Did a cruise round the med then on to Egypt Port Said from there we went on a armed convoy to Gizza so i wouldnt consider driving yourselves to the Pyramids.
