It may be an attempt to soften the impact of blind, slavish acceptance of alien cultures as the norm to the detriment of their society.

They seem to have slightly more rigidity in their collective spine when it comes to standing up to potential accusations of racism from vested interests and the gullible.

Denmark are actually not that liberal in terms of choice and freedom. For instance all pre school children MUST attend some kind of daycare.

well it seems from the article that they are concerned with the rise extremist groups who are the inevitable end product of over liberalisation. "Tolerance" has limits and like many countries with a Muslim population they are no doubt sick and tired of the creeping islamification of their nation.

some of their proposals may be pushing the boundaries a little; clothing never hurt anyone (unless worn in an attempt to evade identification). but any move to persuade incomers to learn the official language of their adopted nation must be good, mustn't it? the situation of the Saleh family (at the bottom of the report) is interesting. holding on to one's culture is one thing - but doing so to the point that his children are barred from learning the local language? how is that preparing them to live in their chosen land?

I dislike the Burka.

I didn't pay it much attention, not many Burka wearers where i live. until I attended a funeral in Coventry, my young son was really scared of these faceless people. It's intimidating clothing.

I disagree. I saw a picture in today’s paper of three (presumably) women clad from the top of their head to their feet in what can only be described as a black dustsheet. There was no indication that what lay underneath was human. And the picture was taken in a children’s playground. I believe that young children may be profoundly disturbed by such a sight and it would certainly frighten the horses (and I hadn’t read ummm’s post before I started writing this).

It isn't. And it doesn’t need to because fanatical Muslims want their hosts to prepare to live with them. Alas many nations are assisting them with that idea.

They are worried about the emergence of the far right, and so they should be.

It is completely the fault of the liberal elite who's grandiose ideas of 'multiculturalism' have failed in an epic scale (I see the Danes now referring to it as ‘parallel’ societies).

I think it is a good thing and it should be adopted across Europe. Quite simply if you dont like the rules and culture of the country you live in then move on. This should apply to all, whatever colour or religious faction you belong to.

Making laws is one thing, enforcing them is quite another. I can't see anything in the article which says what the penalties would be for breaking them. Deportation (to where)? Incarceration (at the Danish taxpayer's expense)?

And as NJ says, incarceration costs are a small price to pay to keep ones culture.

they're right on with the provision of interpreters though. outside of the UK, very few EU countries bend over backwards to accommodate those who cannot - or will not - speak the official language of their adopted nation and provide interpreters free at point of use. most incomers are intelligent, there's no reason they could not learn enough to communicate with officialdom in their new land.
