did you go alone or with a group?? any tips on where to go, what to do etc

Depends - if you're 18 - 25 stick to the East coast, places like Byron Bay, Surfers Paradise, Noosa are similar and all up for partying. I recommend taking the time of travelling to Uluru (Ayer's Rock) in the centre - this can only be done as part of a group - and take in Kings Canyon as well (where Priscilla was filmed). If you want v quiet NW has beaches you will have to yourself.

Having said all that if I was going back to Oz for a fortnight I'd prob spend it all in Sydney - great city.

When i backpacked there (can't believe it's 10 yrs ago!) i stopped at Mission Beach on the east coast,just to recuperate from my time in Sydney..! So if you need a real chilled out few days i recommend there....beautiful beach and rainforest.

The Whitsundays are beautiful. Oh and definately Frazer Island....been there twice and would go again...such freedom...

Uluru was spectacular (it rained for me, waterfalls the lot..!)

More recently i was there for the rugby world cup...we done the Sydney Bridge climb....that is a must!!

There are so many things to do, time permitting.

I went on my own and met loads of people out there.

Whether to go alone or take a group tour is more a matter of temperament than anything - it depends on you. A group does solve transport problems - distances can be vast with not much public transport - but commits you to its itinerary.

Places - Sydney Harbour Bridge tour (it's really not scary - you are clipped on all the time, a bit needlessly IMV). Book in advance (on the web) - it gets full at busy times.

Uluru - yes. I would have thought you could get there independently, but might have to join a group for a tour once there. The Olgas are spectacular as well.

Coober Pedy is interesting for underground houses and opals

Perth is the world's most isolated city. It's further to any other city in Australia than it is from London to Morocco. This gives it a very distinctive character which makes it well worth visiting. It's an affluent and beautiful city with some great beaches in the area. Western Australia is known as the wildflower state and, even if you're not particularly interested in flora & fauna, a trip out to the Pinnacles area of the Red Desert is not to be missed.

In summary, I'd say that Perth is an excellent tourist base but, despite this, it manages to avoid being too 'touristy'.
